In addition to GP consultations the practice adheres to the General Medical Services Contract for the provision of healthcare services:
Antenatal
Your first main appointment is your booking appointment (booking visit) with your midwife normally between 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy.
You’ll have your weight, height and blood pressure measured. You’ll also be asked to give a urine sample for testing.
We do most of the antenatal care, like blood tests, blood pressure and checking growth, at Kemnay Clinic (Fyfe Park) unless there’s a special reason for you to be seen at the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. All the scans are done in Aberdeen - routine ones are done at 14 weeks and then again at 20 weeks.
Antenatal classes (parent education classes) help you prepare for being a parent and give you the chance to meet other mums and partners. They’re a great opportunity for dads and partners to get involved too.

Most women have a healthy and straightforward pregnancy with no major issues.
However, even if you’re having a healthy pregnancy you may still have some issues. For some women, these are an inconvenience while for others they can be more severe.
You’ll probably be able to manage many of these yourself. They should get better on their own or with help from your midwife, GP or pharmacist. Every woman’s experience is different.

Replacing a lost maternity exemption certificate
Please contact the appropriate Practitioner Services Exemptions Department in the Medical Contact Details section if you have lost your maternity exemption certificate and need to replace it.
You can request either a duplicate medical or maternity exemption certificate to be sent out by post to your home address.
Asthma
The Asthma and Chest clinics are run by Nurses Hannah and Gillian S
This clinic is to help people who have asthma or any chest disease to get the best treatment and as few symptoms as possible. We have recently changed our recall systems and patients with more severe asthma will continue to be recalled annually. For those patients at the milder end of the spectrum we will monitor your prescription use and if this suggests your condition is worsening, we will still offer you a review at the clinic. Patients in the following groups will continue to be recalled:
- Those on a combination preventer inhaler or more than 2 inhalers will continue to be reviewed annually
- Children under 16 will be reviewed annually
- Patients who use more than 6 blue inhalers in a year will be offered a review
- Anyone who feels their asthma is deteriorating.
Please bring your inhalers with you (and peak flow meter if you have one) when you attend.

If your symptoms are deteriorating or you have any concerns, please make an appointment to the respiratory nurse or a doctor as well.

Baby Immunisations
Baby immunisations are coming back to the surgery on a Monday Afternoon (2.30-5pm approx.) and a Wednesday Afternoon. (1.30pm-4pm approx.)
The Surgery has NO part in organising these appointments, changing them or cancelling them.
The parent must phone the call centre number on the letter they received if they cannot manage the appointment and need to re-arrange an alternative date.

Blood Pressure
We would like every adult to get a blood pressure check every 3 – 5 years. So, if you haven't had your blood pressure checked for some time, we will be very happy to do it.
If you are already on treatment for blood pressure, we'll invite you in to have this checked every year.

Contraception
General contraceptive advice and contraceptive pill checks can be arranged by appointment. Regular contraceptive injections can also be arranged with any of the practice nurses.
We offer services for IUD and implant fitting, and this can be arranged following discussion with any GP, however Dr Lee and Dr Ballantyne currently run these clinics at specific slot times around their consultations.

Emergency contraception is always available at any time.
Please call the Surgery straight away and tell the receptionist that you need to speak to a GP or Nurse as quickly as possible.
The chemist can also supply emergency contraception over the counter at no charge.
Cervical Smears
You should be automatically notified when you need a smear. Smears are usually done by one of our practice nurses. Your result will be sent automatically to your home address within 4-6 weeks of having your smear. If you have not heard of the result within 6 weeks, please contact the surgery.
All age groups are now 5 years but will be called back early if HPV positive smear result.

Diabetic Clinic
Nurse Susan is our specialist diabetes nurse who looks after patients with diabetes. If you've got diabetes, we want to see you at least once a year to make sure that your blood sugar is well controlled and that you avoid any problems from diabetes.

Dietician
We have a dietician who comes once a month to do a clinic at Fyfe Park. She can give advice on all dietary matters including special diets for specific medical conditions, weight reducing and healthy eating diets. If you want to see her speak first to one of the doctors or nurses.
Drug/Substance Misuse and Alcohol Counselling
We fully appreciate that some patients registering with the Kemnay Medical Group may have a drug/substance misuse problem. As a Practice we will deal with associated medical problems, which may arise, in the usual way.
At present we have designated Health Care Professionals, Garry Murdo and Angela Cran, who will, by appointment, see these patients and manage their problem with the aim of reducing their drug/substance dependency.
He/she will organise any medication e.g. methadone, as part of such a programme.
Each clinic is held separately with appointments being arranged by GP referral.

Ear Syringing
Under advice from the Health Board, we are no longer providing ear syringing as a service.
Most importantly, NEVER USE COTTON BUDS (or any other implements to remove ear wax.
Putting anything into the ear canal simply pushes wax further in, as well as risks damaging the delicate structures of the ear.
The ear is designed to normally channel wax out by itself and does require extra help.
Safe Practice
If you know you have an ear wax problem causing deafness and that your ear is otherwise healthy, you can start ear drop treatment for yourself which you can purchase from the local Chemist.
If your hearing is impaired and you don't know why, you should initially see a practice nurse.
If we find it is wax causing it, we will advise the above treatment.
"But I have had them done at the Surgery previously".....
If you have had your ear syringed previously at the Surgery, you may be disappointed by this new policy. There are other locations that will provide this service.

Epilepsy
If you are taking anticonvulsant medicines for epilepsy, then we’d like to review you annually (either in person or on the telephone).
This is to check that your treatment suits you, to find out how you are feeling and tackle any concerns you may have.
This review is usually carried out by one of the doctors.

Nurse Susan runs this Clinic
Patients with heart conditions need regular reviews to make sure they have no new symptoms, to check drugs and give advice on keeping a healthy heart. We have recently changed the review system to minimise the number of times you have to attend the surgery.
Patients are asked to book an appointment with Carol, the Nurse Technician, for blood tests and various other measurements.
The results will then come back to Nurse Susan who will review all the information.
If the patient highlights any problems or if the results require further discussion, you will be called in for a clinic appointment.
If all information is satisfactory, then no further action will be required, and recall will be re-set for the appropriate period of time.

Minor Illness Clinic
To help maintain quick access to the right person for your problem, we have regular Minor Illness clinic run by Hannah our Minor Illness Nurse, she can attend to 'less serious problems' and can organise prescriptions to treat these conditions if indicated.
She has Face-to-Face Appointments and telephone consultations.
Call Backs from the Minor Illness Nurse
If you have contacted the practice and been booked in for a call with the Minor Illness Nurse, two attempts will be made to speak with you.
If after two attempts, she has been unable to speak with you, this call will then be closed.
If you do still wish to speak to Hannah, you will need to phone the surgery back to start the process again.
Minor Surgery
Some minor surgical procedures can be performed at the surgery following consultation with a doctor, but you may need to be referred to Inverurie Health Centre for other procedures.

Patient Requests for Private Referral
If you choose to see a specialist privately (either self-funding or using private insurance) we would like you to be aware of the following.
Your GP will provide a referral letter with relevant clinical information about your medical problem and other information relating to medical history and medications. The letter will usually be sent to one of the Grampian private medical providers.
If you have private medical insurance, it is your responsibility as the patient to inform your insurance company about the referral and to check that they will cover the costs of the referral (including consultation/investigations/treatment/follow-up). The insurance company may want to know which specialist you are being referred to, please check with the insurer if this is required information.
The private specialist will be responsible for all investigations and treatments relevant to the episode of private care. It is not appropriate for a patient to be seen privately by a specialist and then have blood tests or other investigations relating to that episode of private care via the practice. Any ongoing provision of NHS prescriptions leading on from the private consultation will be at the discretion of your GP, and based on current local prescribing guidelines.
